Maurice Edu has seen limited time since joining Scotland’s Rangers in the summer. He’s racked up a mere two starts, and both of those came back in October. Since then the US international midfielder has been limited to reserve appearances.
However, Rangers’ manager Walter Smith has come out in support of his young star. He sees the former Toronto FC midfielder as a long-term project, one that will help the squad for years to come.

As Rangers search for solutions to their title predicament, they have been urged to put their faith in the $5million man yet to be granted a proper opportunity to prove his value.
Maurice Edu cost that round sum, about £2.6m in August from FC Toronto, before sterling began its exchange-rate plunge, but the American international has started only two games this term – the last back in October.
Even when Kevin Thomson’s cruciate-ligament injury robbed Rangers of a natural holding midfielder in November, Edu did not receive the call to step up and fill his place.

Q: How often do you come back to the states? and what do you miss about the u.s?
Mo: I don’t get very many opportunities to come home aside from the offseason and any international games we have in California. I’m happy with life in Scotland so far but of course I miss my family and friends, but they can always come visit so its not too bad. Since I’m from California, I’d say I miss the sun the most as you don’t see much of it out here.

Q: Do you find that the SPL is a lot more physical than the MLS or NCAA?
Mo Edu: Yes I’ve found the SPL to be a lot more physical than both. Though I haven’t been involved in too many games yet, you can see the level of intensity everyone competes with. The amount of challenges and tackles are increased and every game is truly a battle. Even in training its more physical and a battle as everyone is competing for a spot on the pitch.

Mo has been nominated by US Soccer for it’s Young Male Athlete of the Year Award. Mo is one of 6 finalists up for the award. The candidates were nominated for excelling in the following criteria:
1. Competing and excelling at the youth level (as well as the professional or collegiate level) during the calendar year, including appearing in at least one international match for a U.S. YNT.
2. Exhibiting decorum on and off the field which reflects well on U.S. Soccer.
